The one-day disagreement
There are two honest ways to count, and they differ by one day. The standard (exclusive) count is the plain subtraction: End date minus Start date. The inclusive count adds one, counting both the start and end days themselves. Exclusive days = End minus Start. Inclusive days = End minus Start + 1. Weeks = Days ÷ 7.
| Counting method | When to use it |
|---|---|
| Exclusive (standard) | Deadlines, countdowns, “how many days until”. The usual default |
| Inclusive | Bookings and holidays where both the first and last day count, e.g. “Monday to Friday is 5 days” |
Leap years are handled automatically. The count uses real calendar days, so a span crossing 29 February includes the extra day.
1 January to 15 January, counted
From Thursday, 1 January 2026 to Thursday, 15 January 2026: 15 January 2026 minus 1 January 2026 is 14 days, the exclusive, standard count. Add one for inclusive counting and you get 15 days, counting both end days. In weeks, 14 ÷ 7 is 2 weeks exactly. The start date is a Thursday, the end date a Thursday.
So if someone asks “how many days until 15 January?” on 1 January, the answer is 14 days. If a booking runs from 1 January through 15 January inclusive, it covers 15 days.
Note the difference from the Age Calculator: that page answers “how old am I” from a birthdate to today, expressed in years, months, and days. This page counts the gap between any two dates you choose. It is the tool for deadlines, trips, and countdowns, not birthdays.
Reading the result
Days is the headline count. Weeks and days is the same span in friendlier units for planning (“about 2 weeks”). Weekdays tell you at a glance whether a deadline lands on a weekend. If your count looks one day off from another site, it is almost always the exclusive-vs-inclusive difference. Check which method each tool uses before assuming one is wrong.
Two more things worth knowing. This tool counts calendar days, not business days. For business days, subtract weekends from the calendar-day total, or check the weekdays shown and adjust for holidays yourself. And very long spans are still exact, but the weekday cycle is what it is: dates shift forward by one weekday per year, two after a leap year.
Questions
How many days are between two dates?
Enter both dates above. The standard count is End date minus Start date. For example, 1 January 2026 to 15 January 2026 is 14 days.
What is the difference between inclusive and exclusive counting?
Exclusive counting measures the gap between the dates (14 days in the example). Inclusive counting also counts both end dates themselves (15 days). Use exclusive for countdowns, inclusive for bookings that cover both the first and last day.
Does the calculator count leap days?
Yes. It counts real calendar days, so a span that includes 29 February gets the extra day automatically.
